Mezzanine Alcove, Fourth Floor “Space Pot”
On exhibit is the artist’s 3 Corn Sikyatki on the NMAI Fourth Floor as part of the “Our Peoples” Exhibition. The pot flew to bless and honor Commander John Herrington and crew of Space Shuttle “Endeavour,” flight STS-113 to the International Space Station, November 23 to December 7, 2002. The pot traveled 5.67 million miles at 17,085 mph, altitude of 249 miles, and completing 216 earth orbits. The pot is fondly referred by NMAI staff as the “Space Pot.”
The “Space Pot” described is shown on page 13 in the NMAI Inaugural Publication “Native Universe,” which is being co-published by Smithsonian/National Geographic.
